The rise of online crimes has forced a stronger response from law enforcement and community structures. The Cybercrimes Act 19 of 2020 now provides clear legal consequences for criminal activity committed through phones, computers, or the internet.
⚖️ What is the Cybercrimes Act?
This law criminalizes acts such as:
- Hacking
- Spreading false information
- Cyberbullying and threats
- Online scams and fraud
- Sharing private images without consent
- Inciting violence or property damage online
- Possessing or using hacking tools
👥 Important Message to Social Media Admins
If you’re an admin for WhatsApp groups, Facebook pages, or community forums:
- You must remove harmful posts immediately.
- Failing to act can result in you being charged for aiding or abetting a cybercrime.
- Admins can be prosecuted under Section 17 of the Act.

Don’t share unverified messages or images
Don’t forward crime-related voicenotes or CCTV clips
Don’t name suspects publicly – report to SAPS or CPF
Don’t spread panic – verify before posting
Educate your children about online responsibility
